October 9 and 30
Hatchet Valley Farms of Rockford announces Fall 2021 Trail Rides October 9 and 30! Trail rides will include a costume contest at lunch for both dates! Rides start 8-9:30 a.m. Go-at-your-own-pace riding on scenic, forested, private property. After the ride, join us for our famous “potluck” lunch! No alcohol allowed. Trail rides are $20. Trails are hilly, rocky and narrow – suited for horses and riders in good physical condition. No wagons. Negative Coggins required. Rides start 3.5 miles northwest of Rockford. October 22
The Equality Performing Arts Center, or EPAC, will host Songwriters Night with Jessie Lynn on October 22 from 7-9 p.m. EPAC is located in downtown Equality at 560 Alabama Highway 9. All events are family friendly, free and open to the public. Free entry, but donations are greatly appreciated, with 100% of donations going to the performer(s). Free coffee and popcorn. The Coosa County Cattlemen’s Association will host its Fall Steak Dinner on Friday, October 22, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Coosa County Cattlemen’s Association Barn in Hanover. There will be a short business meeting for the financial report and election of officers. The board will also award the Buddy Gilliland Scholarship at the dinner. Each member dines free; however, guests will be required to pay $15 for the meal. Please ask your wife or someone to bake their best cake for the cake auction. This year the proceeds from the auction will go into the general fund. Excited about seeing all of you!
October 24
The Coosa County Historical Society will meet on Sunday, October 24, at 2 p.m. at the old Crews Drugstore in Rockford. The program will be by photographer Darryl Burton. He is looking for old one-room wooden churches to photograph for a photo book about religion in Alabama. You don’t have to be a member to attend.
October 27
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System will host a Turf Selection meeting on October 27. The meeting will be available on Zoom and will begin at 10:30 and end before noon. Extension Turf Specialist Dr. Dave Han will discuss turf selection at the meeting and answer additional turf questions. This meeting will be very beneficial for anyone wanting more information about the turf they are growing or those who are interested in establishing a new turf. October 30
Rain or shine; the Weogufka Center for Arts, Education and Entertainment; will have the Farm Day event on October 30 from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sausage biscuits and coffee for sale at 7 a.m. in the home economics building. Concessions will be sold in the lunchroom, and the lunch menu includes burgers, hot dogs, pinto beans, cornbread, and homemade fried apple pies. Cake auction at 1 p.m. at the amphitheater stage. Bring a chair and enjoy musical entertainment by a variety of artists! Also wagon rides, pony rides, antique tractors, vendors, food, and more! New free attraction for the youth: “Learn About the Farm,” a hands-on experience to teach children about farm life. Much more to enjoy! Admission is $5 per vehicle. Extension Soil Specialist Dr. Audrey Gamble will discuss the importance of building healthy soils and management practices that improve soils. This meeting will be very beneficial for vegetable growers, but anyone can attend. November 6
Weogufka Volunteer Fire and Rescue will host Open House on Saturday, November 6, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fun and education for the entire family, including meet your firefighters and first responders, the Yellow Dot Program handouts, prizes for children, climb aboard the firetruck, and more! Josh Culver’s Hot Dog Wagon is coming – $5 hot dog plates!
November 11
The Coosa County Annual Treasure Forest Landowner Tour will be held November 11 beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the Robinson property on County Road 93 in the Cottage Grove community. The tour will cover such topics as drones and vegetation, hardwood management, invasives, recreational trails, and herbicide safety. This is a free program. Light morning refreshments and lunch will be provided. Registration deadline is November 5. Register by calling the Coosa County Extension Office at 256-377-4713.
December 4
Goodwater Parks and Rec will host a community-wide Christmas tree decoration competition. First, second and third place winners will be recognized. Trees should be decorated and in place by December 4. For further information please contact Sharonna Hayes at 256-743-1252.
Weekly
The Goodwater Youth Development and Recreational Center is open to the public weekly on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and practice days for the travel ball team are those same days from 5 to 6 p.m. Cheerleader practice is held on Wednesdays and Fridays. Monthly
The Hanover Neighborhood Watch Meeting is held every third Tuesday of the month at the Hanover Volunteer Fire Department building at 6:30 p.m. Always a meal before the meeting begins. Everyone is cordially invited and encouraged to attend. Y’all come!
