School system COVID-19 positivity rate
Special to the News
The Coosa County school district website continues to provide information on positivity rates in the Coosa County school system in the interest of transparency, although it is not required to do so.
As of August 25, the elementary school reported a 0% positivity rate, and the high school reported a positivity rate of 4%, with other students quarantining awaiting test results.
We are thankful that our positivity rate in our school system remains significantly lower than the county positivity rate of 18.8% as reported by the Alabama Department of Public Health.
School systems do not release the names of students who have tested positive because of privacy, but many of our students who have tested positive are family members, boyfriends/girlfriends, or best friends who are likely spending time together outside of school unmasked.
We are thankful that our parents, students and staff are adhering to our safety protocols, including the wearing of masks, even if they may not personally agree because they respect the fact that the school system has a responsibility to create an environment that is safe for everyone, and wearing masks protects others as much as it protects oneself.
