Creek markers will assist boaters
I heard a news item last week, and I promise Christa is looking into further details for “The Coosa County News.” It seems Sheriff Howell is looking into putting markers on Hatchet Creek to assist boaters that think they are lost. GOOD IDEA: even in this era of smart phones that tell you exactly where you are. It seems that there have been several problems this boating season.
My comment about getting lost on Hatchet Creek: C’mon, it is a one-way route with no turns. Water flows downstream all the time, I promise. There are five bridges on the boat-able portion of Hatchet Creek: County Road 66, U.S. Highway 280, U.S. Highway 231, County Road 107 (the King’s Bridge), and County Road 29 (Double Bridges). These serve as pretty obvious reference points. So how do people get lost? Well, poor planning happens, I guess.
I know somebody that got lost on the creek in 1970. He was looking for a landmark, a slough that flows in the spring. He got lost in November; the slough was dry and above the water line. That is the thing about landmarks on the creek. They change with the water level. Trees fall. Floods flush things down. So, some more permanent reference points can help folks.
Now a buzzard can travel the length of the creek in a few wing shakes. The only things faster are the bald and even the golden eagles. Those birds can cruise! And birds need reference points to find their homes. I need reference points to find my favorite water tower. And my favorite dead tree. Have you seen me?
Remember I am your eye in the sky.
Love,
Buzzy
