Coosa schools require masks
By Christa Jennings
At least for the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, the Coosa County school system is requiring the use of face masks or shields.
During a called Board of Education meeting held last Wednesday, members considered the mask requirement. In an effort to “offer on-campus instruction and activities to students with minimal interruptions,” Superintendent of Education David Stover recommended approval of requiring wearing face masks or shields indoors and on school buses by staff and students for the 2021-2022 school year.
It was noted that adjustments to the requirement will be addressed as COVID-19 conditions change.
With all board members present, a motion to approve the mask requirement indoors and on buses was approved with a majority vote of 4-1. Board Member Gay Adams opposed the motion.
Also during last week’s meeting, the board made some hiring and personnel decisions to prepare for the new school year.
One certified recommendation was unanimously approved. That was to hire Bruce Dansby as automotive technology teacher for the school year, pending completion of requirements.
In non-certified recommendations, the board unanimously approved hiring Katrina Brisker as paraprofessional at the elementary school for the school year, with Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief II, or ESSER II, funding for an additional paraprofessional position.
Additionally, the board unanimously approved hiring two paraprofessionals for Central High School, Vivian Jones and Monica Benson, with ESSER II funding for additional paraprofessional positions.
In other business, the board also unanimously approved Vicki Parker as a substitute teacher/aide and lunchroom worker for the school year, pending completion of requirements, and accepted a letter of resignation from elementary school teacher Hailey Willis, effective immediately.
Also regarding personnel matters, the board unanimously approved voluntary and temporary transfers of duties for Dytisha Goodgame to in-school suspension supervision, Angela Hughes to 40% media specialist and 60% technology support to manage Chromebooks and Lynn Strickland to 40% EL and gifted teacher and 60% media specialist.
The board held another special called meeting Wednesday to hire someone to fill the remaining vacant position just prior to the school year starting.
The next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. August 26 and will include the first budget hearing.
