Sheriff’s Academy program available to citizens
By Christa Jennings
The Sheriff’s Office will once again be hosting Sheriff’s Academy, a free program for area citizens.
The Sheriff’s Academy has been held once previously. It is a free course that is designed to help inform residents of the inner workings of the Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement in general.
Projected to be a 6-week course, all classes will be held at the E-911 building in Rockford. The first class will be held September 2.
The course will cover the following topics: a brief history of law enforcement in the United States and the origins of sheriffs, the role of the Sheriff’s Office in modern society, what is required for arrests and searches, weapons – qualifications and use of force, how the jail and corrections operate, patrol and investigations, and court and courtroom procedures.
Depending on the class, it will be held for an hour and a half to two hours. The time and dates for these classes will be announced at a later time, depending on the response of academy applicants.
The deadline to turn in the registration form to the Sheriff’s Office is at noon August 31.
For more information or to register for the course, contact Jamie Thornton or Shelia Thomas at the Sheriff’s Office at 256-377-4922.
