Goodwater Council fills vacant seat
by Crystal Glenn
Councilman John Kelley takes his oath of office and is sworn into service by Tina Lauderdale, town clerk.
Goodwater has now filled its vacant seat on the town council. At the monthly council meeting on July 13, John Kelley of Goodwater was sworn into office.
Kelley is a former council member having served two terms from approximately 2008 to 2016.
“I’m back on the council to help and I hope that we can work together to move things forward in Goodwater,” said Kelley.
Kelley was approached by several current council members after the seat became vacant back in June when Elmore Unbehant resigned.
“I feel very blessed to be back,” said Kelley. “I am looking forward to serving and I want very much to take responsibility for my community.”
One of Kelley’s goals on the council is to revitalize the downtown area in Goodwater.
“I would like to see us continue to facelift downtown,” said Kelley. “These efforts will attract more businesses into our community.”
After being sworn in, Kelley joined the rest of the council for the July meeting. Council members welcomed Kelley and thanked him for joining them.
“We have so many plans that we are putting into place,” said Mayor Lonnie Caldwell. “We are happy to have Johnny back on board.”
The only action taken at this month’s meeting was the unanimous vote to open a checking account for the American Rescue Plan Funds. There will be an upcoming discussion on how the funds will be utilized in the future.
The next Goodwater Council meeting will be held on August 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the community center.
