First Fridays on Flagg to restart next month
First Fridays on Flagg to restart next month
Special to the News
Approval to restart group gatherings on Flagg Mountain has now been received, and the much loved First Friday events will begin again on Friday, July 2, with an Independence Day celebration complete with fireworks and entertainment.
The Alabama Hiking Trail Society and Friends of Flagg invite everyone to join in this exciting event.
Prior to the COVID-19 shutdowns, First Friday of each month was celebrated with a community based potluck meal at the cabin area on Flagg Mountain.
Anywhere from 25 to 150 people from as far away as Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Selma, and even Georgia – depending on weather, etc. – were known to ascend to the Fellowship Circle in front of the Rangers Cabin, bringing all types and varieties of great foods to share. People have been asking when these events would be starting again, and now is the perfect time.
People are urged to bring their own chairs and some type of food to share – meat, casseroles, vegetables, desserts, tea, water, or soft drinks.
Paper plates, cups, napkins, and plastic utensils are also wonderful donations. There is no cost to attend First Friday, but donations to the upkeep of the facilities are also appreciated.
Dinner will be served at 6 p.m., but people are urged to come early for a good parking space and seating spot. Someone will be available to direct parking to make room for as many vehicles as possible. The fireworks will start at dark.
Access to Flagg Mountain is best from Lay Dam Road (Coosa County Road 55) and then the Weogufka State Forest Road. Follow the sign to the cabin area.
The tower area is currently closed for construction of a parking area, new trail and renovation of the tower itself. There is an approximately one mile hiking trail that goes from the cabins to the tower if anyone is interested in seeing the work being done.
