Clanton man arrested for attempted murder
By Christa Jennings
Richard Hayes
A Clanton man was arrested Sunday on three charges involving discharging a firearm, including attempted murder.
Sheriff Michael Howell reported that on May 30 deputies were dispatched to Lake Mitchell Drive in Coosa County, near the Chilton County line, in reference to a possible assault.
Upon their arrival at the scene, Howell said that someone immediately began shooting toward the deputies. He reported that the individual fired at least five shots before deputies were able to apprehend him.
Howell explained that the shooter was attempting to shoot an individual across the street. In the process, the man being shot at had to duck behind a vehicle for protection.
Howell said the shooter shot at least five times toward the individual, and in the process he also shot into an unoccupied residence and an unoccupied vehicle.
The suspect, 56-year-old Richard Hayes of Clanton, was taken into custody. He was arrested on charges of attempted murder, shooting into an unoccupied building and shooting into an unoccupied vehicle.
Hayes’ bond was set at $50,000 for the attempt to commit murder charge and $3,000 for each of his two other charges.
Therefore, his total bond has been set at $56,000. As of press time he remained in custody at the Coosa County Jail awaiting trial.
Anyone who suspects or observes illegal activity is encouraged to report it to the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office at 256-377-4922 or online at www.coosacountyso.org. Anonymous tips are also welcome.
