Impacts of pandemic fatigue
Ask Accordia: I am concerned for my wife and the pandemic’s impact on her life. She is becoming more and more anxious about things that are out of her control, and it is taking a toll on her mental health and physical health. What can I do to help her?
Pandemic fatigue is sometimes referred to as the three-headed monster. It is a combination of anxiety, depression and overall sadness. Your wife is certainly not alone in her experience.
People report becoming more irritable, lonely and feeling disconnected from family and friends. World health leaders say the pandemic’s exact toll on mental health is unknown. At Accordia Health, we recognize the connection between good mental health and good physical health.
Because there is so much we cannot control in this pandemic, encourage your wife to focus on things she can control, such as exposure to media reports involving COVID-19. Now that spring has sprung get outdoors for some fresh air and sunshine. Research shows that vitamin D might play an important role in regulating mood and warding off depression. It is also known to help fight certain diseases.
Mental health is a critical component of public health. COVID-19 is the most challenging public health crisis of our lifetimes; it is more important than ever to celebrate public health – both physically and mentally. That is why at Accordia Health, we recognize National Public Health Week April 5-11. This year’s theme is “Building Bridges to Better Health.” I’ve given you examples to build better mental health for you and your wife. Accordia Health can help you build better physical health. It starts by scheduling a checkup with our providers.
