Juneteenth Pageant, Grill Master Competition
Special to the News

Save Our Sisters Queendom (S.O.S) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization started by Latisha Simmons of Goodwater.
S.O.S. is serving the local community with a focus on womens’ and girls’ issues. The organization has been in operation for about two years and has been hosting numerous programs and events in the Goodwater community.
Last year was the inaugural celebration of the Juneteenth event. Simmons was pleased with the event, but would have liked to have done more. However, because of a lack of funds and manpower, things were not quite where she wanted them to be.
Simmons mentioned that there are several out-of-pocket expenses, and she is hoping for participation from the community so that the organization can continue to grow.
Simmons is currently planning the first Miss Juneteenth Pageant. The Miss Juneteenth Pageant is for girls ages 18 and up, and the Junior Miss Juneteenth is for girls 13 to 17.
The theme for this pageant will be “African Royalty.” Simmons is excited to get the girls to sign up for the pageant and show off their creativity with knowledge of African royalty. Volunteers will be needed to judge the pageant.
Simmons is also planning the first Juneteenth Grill Master Competition this year. The themes for this competition will be “mastering a beef brisket” and “bring out the best rib cooker in town.” If you think you might be Goodwater’s next grillmaster, don’t wait to sign up.
There will be prizes for both the pageant winners and the grill off winners. There is a participation fee of $10 for entry for each of the events.
Vendors will also be welcome to set up at these events with a $10 fee. Volunteers will be needed to assist with games and activities and for a sanitation crew.
Lastly, each of these events will host live entertainment. Simmons welcomes people to come and show off their talent; whether it be singing, dancing, or poetry, you are encouraged to come.
As of press time, it was unknown what date or dates these events will be held or what the timing of the events will be.
Simmons is excited to give the people of Goodwater something to look forward to each year. Volunteers and participants will be greatly appreciated and becoming a part of something that is great for the Goodwater community.
Those interested in participating or volunteering should call Simmons at 256-299-5382 or email SOSQueendom@gmail.com.
Donations are greatly appreciated. Anyone who would like to donate funds to support any of these events is asked to contact Simmons or use CashApp to send funds to $SOSQUEENDOM.
Let’s bring Goodwater together.
